Abstract

1,036,508. Reciprocating pumps. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. April 26, 1965, No. 17476/65. Heading F1A. [Also in Divisions F2 and G3] A coupling for effecting relative rotation between a fuel injection pump cam-shaft 11 and a drive shaft 10, for automatically adjusting injection timing in accordance with engine speed, comprises an axially slidable member 20 engaging shaft 10 through helical splines 22 and shaft 11 through straight splines 21, oil under pressure being supplied to a chamber 33 to move member 20 to the right against springs 30 and 42 in dependence on the setting of a valve 27 controlling communication between chamber 33 and the casing via passages 36, 37 and actuated by centrifugal weights 40. Damping of the movement of member 20 is provided by oil trapped between splines 22 and flange 28. The quantity of oil supplied to chamber 33 is limited by a restriction 44, and the intermittent communication between passages 24 and 25 during rotation.
