Abstract

1,036,408. Mechanical calculating apparatus. V. J. C. COOPER. Sept. 24, 1964 [Sept. 26, 1963], No. 37946/63. Heading G4B. A slide calculator, particularly for tides comprises a frame having two perpendicularly moving slides 6, 7 one of which carries a rotational index 8. The upper slide 6 is transparent and has a " mean level " line 13 marked on it together with other lines 14 representing the state of the tide. These lines 14 radiate from a point on the " mean level " line 13 and are extended to and under the rotatable dial 8 which is transparent and marked with hours. Lines 15 and 16 represent high and low water respectively. The slide 7 is provided with a linear scale 11 representing the height of the tide. As shown, the calculator is set for a time and place at which high tide occurs at 4 o'clock, local high water is 20 feet and the mean tide level is 11 feet. From this it can be seen that at 6 o'clock the tide will be falling and the depth of water will be just over 15 feet. The dial 8 may be movable horizontally to allow for variations in ebb and flow times of the lines 14 are suitably shaped. An opaque backing may be provided behind the dial to prevent distraction by matter on the slide 7.
