Abstract

A detergent composition comprises (a) a synthetic detergent, and (b) as a builder, a water-soluble salt of ethane-1-hydroxy-1:1-diphosphonic acid, the weight ratio (b) to (a) preferably being 1:2-10:1. (a) may be a sodium alkyl sulphate, alkylglyceryl ether sulphonate, fatty acid monoglyceride sulphate or sulphonate, or fatty acyl isethionate, sodium or potassium alkylbenzene sulphonate, alkyl or alkylphenol polyglycol ether sulphate or N-acyl-N-methyl tauride; coconut fatty acid ethanolamide; ethylene oxide condensates with polypropylene glycols, with alkyl- or dialkylphenols, with the condensate of ethylene diamine and propylene oxide, or with alcohols; tert. amine and phosphine oxides; sodium 3-dodecylamino-propionate and -propane sulphonate; and 3-(N:N-dimethyl-N-hexadecyl-ammonia) -propane- or -2-hydroxypropane-1 -sulphonate. (b) is preferably used in the form of the tri-sodium salt, although the potassium, ammonium and substituted ammonium salts may also be employed. Sodium sulphate and carbonate, sodium or potassium silicate (SiO2: M2O=1-2.8:1) or hydroxide, carboxymethyl or carboxymethylhydroxyethyl cellulose, fatty acid, sodium or potassium toluene, benzene or xylene sulphonate, tarnish inhibitors such as benzotriazole or ethylenethiourea, bacteriostats such as trichlorocarbanilide, fluorescent brighteners, perfume and dye may also be incorporated. The compositions may be produced as liquids in aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution or in a nonionic detergent vehicle, or in granular, flake or tablet form. When produced as a liquid the weight ratio (b) to (a) is preferably 1:2-3:1, while for granular compositions it is preferably 1:1-5:1.
