Abstract

A crate for a sewing machine consists of a number of detachable parts which can be separated and then re-assembled so as to form a stand for the machine. A crate 15, Fig. 1 (not shown), has sides, ends, top and bottom held in place by screws and battens. The exposed surfaces of the sides, &c. are unfinished. Within the crate is a sewing machine 104, Fig. 3 (not shown), a pair of generally U-shaped metal legs 106,107 a treadle board, a pulley 116, connecting rods and a bag of nuts, &c. The inner surfaces of the sides, &c. of the crate are polished, and are protected by layers of loose corrugated cardboard 94, &c. Felt-covered battens 82, &c. within the crate protect and support the various parts. The crate 15 is separated into its various sections. The side walls, &c. of the crate are then screwed together again, with their polished surfaces outwards, Fig. 2 (not shown), to form a stand having a hole in its table surface to receive the sewing machine 104. The legs 106,107 are bolted to the end walls of the table, and two of the crate battens 51,52 are bolted to ground-engaging horizontal sections of the U-shaped legs. A treadle bar 108 is connected to the two lower ends of the legs, and provides a support for the treadle 46, which is connected through a link 113 to the pulley 116, journalled upon the leg 107, (to drive) through a belt 120 to the sewing machine 104.
