A method of severing individual sheets from a band 1, Fig. 1, formed by overlapping sheets la joined to a backing layer 2 e.g. of thermoplastic material comprises folding the band about a plate 3, Fig. 2, and severing the layer 2 between the edges of contiguous sheets 1a by means of a knife 4. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises in addition tc the plate 3 and the knife 4, which is pneumatically operated, a guide plate 8, Fig. 4, and conveyer belts 7 between which the band is fed from a supply reel 5, guide members 12 mounted on a rotatable shaft 11 and a plate 18 supported by arms 17 on a rotatable shaft 15 and provided with resilient portions 19. Shaft 15 is rotated by means of pneumatically-operable racks 37 engaging pinions 38 on the shaft. Shaft 11 is rotated by means of an arm 14 carried by the shaft 15 engaging a tappet 13. The apparatus may be coupled directly to a laminating machine.
