Abstract
1,034,924. Automatic exchange systems;. POSTMASTER GENERAL. June 1, 1962, No. 26177/64. Divided out of 1,034,921. Heading H4K. In a time division multiplex system comprising a co-ordinate array of cross-point switches for interconnecting incoming and outgoing multiplex trunks, each cross-point has an individual control circuit which under the influence of a set of (rectangular) pulses and a set of sawtooth pulses controls the closing and opening respectively of the switch during the relevant time slot. As shown, each trunk, comprising for example GO and RETURN highways 2, 3 together with their associated marking paths 1, 4, is multipled to a number of crosspoint switches, e.g. transistors 9 to 12 controlled by an individual circuit, e.g. NPN transistor 16. During the time slot allotted to a connection via the switch shown, a positive-going P pulse provided by circulating store 28 charges capacitor 23 so that eventually transistor 16 bottoms and thereby initiates conduction of the transistors 9 to 10 of the switch. The leading edge of each P pulse occurs when a sawtooth wave BP2 is at its minimum. Consequently, upon cessation of the P pulse, the rate at which capacitor 23 discharges into the base circuit of 16 is governed by the slope of BP2, the discharge terminating abruptly when BP2 reverses whereby transistor 16 and hence transistors 9 to 12 stop conducting.
