A power brake arrangement comprises a brake actuator having two chambers 2, 3, a first brake control system 10 having an operating device 13 and being connected to one chamber, a second brake control system 18 having an operating device 21 and being connected to the other chamber, and means 14 operable to render the first device incapable of varying the fluid pressure in the first system in a direction to effect brake release when the second system pressure is varied to effect a brake application. Actuation of valve 20 by pedal 21 permits fluid to flow from reservoir 19 to brake actuator chamber 3 thereby moving diaphragm 6 and brake rod 9 to the right to apply the brakes. At the same time, pressure in conduit 29 acts on diaphragm 27 attached to stem 26 to shut closure member 24 of the valve 14 to isolate the first system. Should the system fail or the diaphragm 6 rupture, an emergency system comprising a reservoir 11, valve 12 and hand brake 13 can supply fluid through the now open valve 24 and a one valve 34 to chamber 2 formed by a further diaphragm 4 to actuate rod 9. In the event of a fault in the diaphragm 4 when a service application of pedal 21 is made, pressure build-up in chamber 3 will move the defective diaphragm to the left to seal pipe 17 and close valve 24 to isolate the exhaust side of valve 12.
