Headings F2E, F2F and F2S. In an hydraulic over-run brake for tractor-trailer vehicles comprising trailer wheel brake cylinders operated by a master cylinder 1 which is disposed in a drawbar connection, the master cylinder comprises a piston rod 7 which extends through an adjoining damping cylinder through a porous partition 4 (e.g. of sintered metal) through which gaseous and liquid pressure medium can pass over a relatively long time. Air and vapour bubbles forming in the damping chamber 6 pass through the porous partition 4 into the chamber 5 and can escape to the reservoir when the brake is released and the tipping valve 13 is held open by the piston member of the master cylinder formed by a sliding member 11 mounted on the plunger end 8 of the piston rod 7 in association with a spring 10 and a spring cup 9. When the piston rod 7 moves as a result of the trailer overrunning the tractor vehicle the porous partition 4 is substantially impermeable, since the pressure medium needs a much longer time to pass through the porous partition than is needed to apply the brake. Pressure increase in the chamber 6 caused by a rise in temperature of the damping medium or by the slow cessation of damping are reduced by the damping medium being able to pass from the chamber 6 through the partition 4 to the chamber 5. A negative pressure in the chamber 6 can be gradually equalised by this means.
