Abstract
Textile materials comprising at least some fibres of regenerated cellulose are crease-proofed, stiffened and rendered dimensionally stable by treating them with a cross-linking agent, e.g. formaldehyde, dimethylol ethylene urea, dimethylol propylene urea, glyosol, an acetate of a dialdehyde with a monohydric alcohol or of a monoaldehyde with a polyol or hemiacetol, and mercerising them, e.g. with caustic soda. The treatment with the cross-linking agent may be effected in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. a polyester having free acid groups and prepared from sabacic, maleic, succinic or phthalic acid or an anhydride thereof with a glycol or glycerol. The textile materials may also be treated with a film forming polyol or an alkali-soluble cellulose ether and bleached with sodium chlorite prior to mercerisation. The mercerisation may be applied to a fabric whose constituent yarns are of identical and uniform composition and may be accompanied or followed by stretching or it may be applied to a fabric whose constituent yarns are of differing and or non-uniform composition, shrinkage being permitted to occur during mercerisation to produce a bulked fabric. In the production of bulked fabrics the yarns may be of uniform but differing composition, some of the yarns being composed of regenerated cellulose fibres which have been treated with the cross-linking agent or some of the yarns being uniformly composed of regenerated cellulose fibres, the other yarns being of different origin. In this case the cross-linking agent may be applied to the regenerated cellulose fibres, to the yarn composed of regenerated cellulose fibres or to the fabric after weaving. Alternatively the fabric may be composed of yarns which have been cross-linked to a differing extent. In the production of bulked yarn the mercerisation may be applied to yarns composed of regenerated cellulose fibres which have been treated with a cross-linking agent together with fibres of non-cellulosic origin or of fibres of regenerated cellulose which have been cross-linked to differing extents.
