Abstract
Novel compounds of the Formula I, in which Ph represents an unsubstituted 1,2-phenylene group or a 1,2-phenylene group substituted by one or more C1- 4 alkyl, C1- 4 alkoxy or trifluoromethyl groups or halogen atoms, Ar represents a phenyl group containing a substituent of the Formula II in which A represents a carboxyl or functionally converted carboxyl group and R1 or R2 represents C1- 4 alkyl groups, R represents a hydrogen atom or a C1- 4 alkyl group and the group of the formula -(CnH2n- 2)-represents an unbranched C3- 5 alkylene chain and carries the groups or group and atom represented by Ar and R, and salts thereof where the compound of the Formula I contains a salt forming group, are prepared by reacting a compound of the Formula III, wherein Ar0 represents a hydroxylphenyl group, or a salt thereof, with a compound of the formula Hal-C(R1)(R2)-A where Hal represents a halogen atom and if desired, converting compounds containing a free carboxyl group into salts or functional derivatives thereof or converting functional derivatives into free carboxyl groups or other functional derivatives and, if desired, separating mixtures of isomers into single isomers. <FORM:1034297/C2/1> <FORM:1034297/C2/2> <FORM:1034297/C2/3> 1 - (4 - Hydroxyphenyl) - 1,2,3,4 - tetrahydronapthalene is prepared by reacting 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthol with phenol in the presence of aluminium chloride. Therapeutic compositions which reduce the cholesterol level in the blood and have liver-protecting properties, in the form of capsules, tablets, dragees, suppositories, solutions, suspensions and emulsions, for oral, topical and parenteral application, comprise compounds of the Formula I and, where applicable, their physiologically tolerable salts, with a pharmaceutically suitable carrier.
