Abstract

1,033,616. Electrical engine starting mechanisms. C.A.V. Ltd. April 16, 1963 [April 26, 1962], No. 15922/62. Heading F1K. [Also in Division H2] In an electric starter mechanism a spring 28 is compressed when tooth to tooth end engagement of pinion 22 and wheel 23 occurs so that a solenoid armature 25 may continue to move until a switch 36, 36a is closed thereby energising the rotor 12. When solenoid 24 is energized armature 25 is moved against the loading of spring 26 until ring 27 engages ring 29 to move pinion 22 into engagement with wheel 23. Rotation of pinion 22 by the rotor 12 after engagement allows it to move fully into engagement with wheel 23. Rotor 12 is mounted on tubular spindle 13 which carries commutator 15 and bearing bush 16 and is supported on spigot 17 from cap 18. A central shaft 14, helically engaged with the sleeve of pinion 22 has a forward extension 14a mounted in bearing 19 on cover 20. Pinion 22 is retained in its engaged or dis-engaged positions by balls 39 which engage recesses 41 or groove 40, balls 39 are retained by a spring-loaded sliding collar 37. Cover 20, a transparent polycarbonate, part 32, casing 10 and cap 18 are interconnected by bolts 31, (Fig. 2 not shown) on which are supported pivoted brush holders. Further brushes holders are mounted on pivots 34 extending from an annular carrier 35.
