Feeding material.-A machine (Fig. 4) for filling cans with pasty material comprises means for feeding a measured quantity of material F laterally into the nozzle 51 and a reciprocating ram 111 which ejects the material F into the can A. As the material F is pushed into the can A the can slides off the nozzle 51 and at the end of the ejection stroke the end of the ram projects beyond the end of the nozzle so that any material thereon can be wiped into the can. On the configuration described, the retracted ram 111 is stationary whilst the pin 120 moves in the slot 140, during which time the measure of material F is fed into the nozzle 51. Measuring material.-The means for feeding and measuring the material comprises a rotor 57 (also Fig. 9, not shown), which rotates in the housing 26 (Fig. 4) and an adjustable piston 89 in the bore 62 of the rotor 57. The piston 89 consists of two separable halves 90, 91 (Fig. 8, not shown) which are screwed to a rod 96, and the volume of material issued each time from the rotor may be varied by adjusting the length of the piston. The piston 89 is forced along the bore from bottom to top by the pressure of the material in the tube 108, and this forces the quantity F out of the bore and into the nozzle. As the ram ejects the quantity F, the rotor is turned so that the piston is again at the bottom of the bore, and the quantity 9 is ready to be fed into the nozzle. The machine described comprises two halves as above, synchronized so that cans are filled alternately at the two nozzles.
