Abstract

1,032,542. Clutches; springs. G. W. SEIFERT. June 20, 1963 [June 20, 1962; Dec. 20, 1962; April 19, 1963], No. 24666/63. Headings F2C and F2S. [Also in Division F1] A friction clutch in the drive of a vehicle engine cooling fan is engaged and disengaged rapidly by thermally responsive means. As shown in Fig. 1 the temperature responsive control member is arranged in the flow of cooling air and is constituted by a bimetallic strip 18a arranged behind a radiator 31 and having a hook-like element 39 for operating a snap spring 38a. The snap spring 38a carries by means of a short spring 34 a pressure pin 16a which cooperates with a clutch part 8a which is in screwthreaded connection with the hub 12a of the fan. The clutch part 8a is connected by a torsion spring 36 to the fan body 28 and co-operates with a clutch part 13a fixed to the driving wheel la. Above a desired operating temperature the bimetallic strip 18a gives a sudden reversal of shape to the snap ring 38a causing the coupling pin 16a to press the clutch part 8a into engagement with the part 13a. The fan blades 11a are connected to the fan body 28 by means of a slipping clutch comprising friction surfaces 41, 42 engaged by a cup spring 43 and centrifugal balls 44. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) a bimetallic strip 18b is formed as a snap-over spring and is arranged behind a radiator 31b. The bimetallic spring 18b is operatively connected to a pressure plate 51 engaging pressure pins 16b which below a predetermined temperature engage a coupling part 8b to disengage the clutch. The clutch part 8b is formed with a screw thread engaging balls 44 mounted in the fan hub 12b and is urged by a spring 26b to engage a clutch part 13b fast with a driving wheel 1b. The wheel 1b is also connected to the fan by means of an hydraulic slip clutch comprising projections 53 formed on the clutch part 13b which are adjacent surfaces 54 of the fan body 28b and which cause the formation of a ring of oil during operation. The embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown) is generally similar to that of Fig. but the hydraulic slip clutch comprises projections 64 formed on the fan body 28c and projections 63 formed on a ring 62 fast with the coupling part 13c and producing a centrifugal ring of oil in a chamber 65 sealed by a ring 40c having a lip 66 engaging the outer periphery of the clutch part 13c. During relative movement the projections 63 conduct sprayed oil to the sealing lip 66 to prevent wear. In a modification the projections 63 are carried by spring arms which extend under the influence of centrifugal force and which are otherwise removed from the centrifugal ring of oil.
