Abstract

In a process for the improvement of a crude mixture of a cycloaliphatic alcohol and a cycloaliphatic ketone a mixture thereof is subjected to distillation in the absence of molecular oxygen and/or in the presence of an oxygen-scouring substance, for example sodium sulphite, to give a distillate comprising cycloaliphatic alcohol. The distillation may be effected in the presence of an inert gas, for example, nitrogen. The distillate may then be dehydrated in the presence of a suitable dehydrogenation catalyst, such as copper, brass or zinc oxide, to convert the alcohol to ketone.
