A support unit to support the roof to the roadhead of a mine in which a coalface conveyer 9 is situated, comprises forward roofengaging means 1, 2 positioned in advance thereof, intermediate roof-engaging means 3 spanning it, and rear roof-engaging means 4, 5 positioned in rear thereof, means connecting the intermediate roof-engaging means 3 to the means 1, 2 and 4, 5 to slide relatively thereto, hydraulic means to set the means 1, 2 and 4, 5 and 3 against the roof, one hydraulic ram means to advance the means 1, 2 and another to advance the means 4, 5, either or both of which can advance the means 3. The roof-engaging means 1, 2 and 4, 5 each include a support frame(s) each made up of a roof bar, a floor skid and props such as 1A, 1B, 1C, whereas the roof-engaging means 3 comprises a single roof bar set in position by hydraulic means made up of props 3A, 3B, placed before and behind the conveyer 9, respectively. To the roof bars of the means 1, 2 and 4, 5 the roof bar of the means 3 may be slidably connected. It may be set in position by jacks acting between it and the former roof bars, and may be of articulated sections. The means 3 may be made to overlap the means 1, 2 and 4, 5, can have either of two spacing positions and may have a skid. The means 4, 5 may include a forward cantilever to support the roof over the conveyer 9, when adjacent to it, and may have a rear extension bar for roof support. Various forms of the invention are obtained by varying the number of front and rear support frames.
