Abstract

1,031,189. Mechanical seals. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. May 7, 1964 [June 4, 1963], No. 19097/64. Heading F2B. In the mechanical seal comprising a sealing washer 24 keyed to a retainer 12 and an elastomeric sleeve 18 housed in the retainer, the sleeve has a frustoconical portion 58 which sealingly engages the retainer and axially locates the sleeve by being' snapped over a rib 50 on the retainer. The sleeve has end flanges which respectively engage a rear face 30 of the washer and an end portion 48 of the retainer. The washer 24 has axial grooves 36 engaged by ribs 38 on the retainer and is urged outwardly from the retainer by a spring 26 located between ferrules 20 and 22. In operation as a shaft seal with the part 14 of the retainer press-fitted in the shaft housing and the washer 24 in facial sealing contact with a radial surface carried by the shaft, the pressure of the sealed fluid acts to increase the sealing pressure of the portion 58 on the retainer 12.
