Abstract
A process for the production of polyurethanes comprises reacting an organic diisocyanate with a polymeric glycol of M.W. at least 600, said reactants being present in such amounts that the -NCO to -OH ratio is from 1.5 to 3.5 so as to form an -NCO terminated prepolymer, this prepolymer then being reacted with a chain extending agent comprising a mixture of any isomer of tolylene diamine and a glycol, said tolylene diamine and said glycol being present in the mixture in a molar ratio of from 0.66 to 19, said mixture being present in such an amount that the overall-NCO to active hydrogen atom ratio is from 0.7 to 1.3. The polymeric glycol may be a polyalkylene glycol, polyalkylene arylene ether glycol or polyalkylene thioether glycol. Many organic diisocyanates are specified including aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic diisocyanates. The glycol chain extender may be butane diol, pentane diol, hexane diol thiodiglycol, diethylene glycol, tripropylene glycol, p-phenylene di-(BETA-hydroxy ethyl ether). In a typical Example (1) tolylene diisocyanate was reacted with polypropylene glycol in amount to provide an -NCO to -OH ratio of 2.2. To the prepolymer a mixture of tolylene diamine and triethylene glycol was added.
