Abstract

A polymerization catalyst comprising vanadium oxytrichloride, an alkyl aluminium compound, and an alcohol is used for copolymerizing ethylene and a alpha-olefin, and terpolymerizing ethylene, an alpha-olefin, and a non-conjugated diene such as dicyclopentadiene, 1,4-pentadiene, 1,4 - hexadiene, 1,5 - cyclooctadiene, methyltetrahydroindene, ethyltetrahydroendene, or 2-methyl-norbornadiene. The alpha-olefin may be propylene, buten-1, penten-1, hexen-1, hepten-1, hepten-1, octen-1, isobutylene, 5-methylpeten-1, styrene, alpha-methylstyrene, or vinylcyclohexane. During the copolymerization reaction the molecular weight of the product may be controlled by addition o dialkyl zinc or hydrogen. The copolymerization and terpolymerization is effected by conventional "low-pressure" techniques. Exemplified catalysts are ethylaluminium sesquichloride, vanadium oxychloride and ethyl, or n-butyl, or n-octyl alcohol, and di-isobutyl-aluminium monochloride, VOCl3 and n-butyl alcohol. The terpolymers are vulcanized with conventional sulphur-containing mixes.
