In belting comprising plies of woven fabric coated or impregnated with rubber, synthetic rubber or plastics material, the plies are made of warps and wefts of folded or doubled manmade filaments or fibres and cotton, and the warps of one or more plies are made of greater tensile strength than the wefts, by incorporating in the warps a predominating proportion of man-made fibres or filaments, whereas the wefts of one or more other plies, preferably the centre ply of five, are of greater tensile strength than the warps. The stronger weft yarns may be arranged at 90 degrees or other angle to the length of the belt, or the ply containing them may be cut on the bias or be woven with the wefts at an angle other than 90 degrees to the warp.
