Abstract

1,030,809. Polyolefin coatings. J. H. FLYNN. March 25,1964 [Nov. 20, 1963], No. 12594/64. Headings B2B and B2E. A composite material comprising a base material and a polyolefin coating is produced by brushing the surface of the base material with flame of high heat-intensity prior to coating the surface with molten polyolefin when the temperature of the surface is below the temperature of the polyolefin coating. The surface is brushed with the flame sufficiently briefly to avoid appreciable depthwise heat penetration into the material. The polyolefin coating may be bonded directly to the base material without any other bonding agent and with the polyolefin so completely attached to the material as to show not even microscopic gapping between them substantially anywhere. The base material may be nonfibrous or fibrous, e.g. steel plate, non-fibrous plastics material, board-stock, wood veneer, closely woven textile fabrics and paper. Fibrous materials may be brushed with flame of sufficient heat intensity to incinerate loose burnable fibrous matter thereon. As shown, base material w is brushed with flame F of burner 14 as the material passes to a station A where the primed face is coated with molten polyolefin P from extruder 12. The entire face, i.e. over its whole width, of the material may be brushed with the flame. Paper may be primed by brushing the entire face thereof with a flame of temperature approximately 2500‹F as the paper is fed continuously to the coating station at a rate of approximately 1000 ft. per minute. The polyolefin may be polyethylene or polypropylene.
