Endless-band conveyers coacting with fixed surfaces. -In apparatus for extracting water from coal and of the kind comprising upper and lower heating-elements over the surfaces of which the coal is moved in succession by the upper and lower parts of an endless scraper conveyer, the heating- elements each comprise a number of sections or compartments disposed in alinement and connected bv means permitting the flow of the heating-medium from one section to another, and the heating-elements and the operative parts of the conveyer are disposed at an inclination to the horizontal. The apparatus may be used in conjunction with that described in Specification 6944/15. As shown in Fig. 1, coal fed at m is moved over the surface of upper inclined steamchests b by a scraper conveyer a mounted on drums k, and falls over the upper end of the upper chests and between the scrapers a<1> on to similar lower chests, along which it is moved by the lower part of the conveyer to a suitable cross conveyer p. The chests b comprise sections formed of plates b<1> with a hoop frame b<2> connecting the edges and held apart by distance-pieces c', Fig. 3, and bolts c. The sections may be connected by metal conduit portions e projecting into the ends of adjacent sections having their ends bevelled to accommodate asbestos cr other packing e<1>, or steam connexion between the sections may be effected by elbow pipes and suitable couplings or spigot and faucet joints. Steam enters the chests at d, and water of condensation leaves the chests by outlets d'. The chests have upstanding side plates/, and a casing g and chimney h are provided.
