Hand shears. -- In garden shears, pruners, wire-cutters, &c., the blades h, Fig. 1, are L-shaped, and are connected by links i to a stud c working in a slot d in a bar e, the stud being moved by cranked handles b connected by links f to the end of the bar e. The blades are double-edged and are closed when the stud is midway along the slot d, so that the blades cut both on the outward and inward movement of the handles. Notches h* in the blades are for cutting wire, &c. For a tree-pruner, the handles b are replaced by a pole fixed to the bar e, and the stud c is operated by a wire and spring, the blades cutting in one direction only. In a short pruner cutting in both directions, one handle is fixed to the bar e and the other to the stud c. For edging-shears with long handles, the stud is connected by a link to the end of one handle, which is pivoted to the other to form a lever. In a two-way wire or twig cutter, the notches h are formed on both sides of short blades or jaws. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the handles are pivoted to a cross-bar d', and engage the stud c by means of slots 6*. The handles a are adjustable in length. One of the handles may be adapted to be fitted on to a rifle barrel.
