Abstract

1,029,907. Two-part couplings. AMP Inc. May 26, 1964 [June 10, 1963], No. 21646/64. Heading H2E. A plug or socket connector member is formed of two axially aligned spaced tubular portions 6, 10 connected by spring contacts 12 extending helically about the axis of the tubular portions, the spring contacts being arranged to flex radially and to be torsioned longitudinally as a result of mating the connector member with a corresponding rigid member. The member is formed from a spring-tempered sheet metal blank formed with parallel angularly arranged slots between its ends and rolled so as to have either a circular or rectangular cross-section. If a socket is formed in this manner, it may be supported in a plate 20, Fig. 3 (not shown), by means of a hollow post 26 having resilient detents 42 engaging a flange 8 to hold the upper part of the contact firmly while the lower portion of the contact is free to move in the post. A lead 24 may be fixed to the post by an annular cap 36 as described in Specification 944,544. The socket may be formed with two open ends to form a plug-in sleeve connector. If the connector is formed as a plug, Fig. 17 (not shown), the end 98 may be tapered to guide the pin into the socket.
