Abstract

1,029,494. Jointing by tube expanding; stamping. INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. Feb. 5, 1965 [Feb. 20, 1964], No. 7216/64. Headings B3J and B3Q. [Also in Division F2] A method of sealing the end of a tubular member such as a boiler tube in which the material of a hollow plug is located in the end to be sealed and having its outer end open and its inner end closed comprises forcing the material of the plug into sealing engagement with the inner surface of the member by means of an explosive. Preferably packing such as plaster of Paris is introduced into the tubular member before the plug is inserted and may also act to close the inner ends of the plug, and the plug is filled with packing material such as water before the explosive is detonated. Axial movement of the plug may be restricted by supplying the plug with a lip or by packing material inserted into the tubular member, or by the use of a tapered plug.
