Abstract

1,029,430. Gins. CONTINENTAL GIN CO. Dec. 9, 1963 [July 31, 1963], No. 48518/63. Heading D1N. A roller gin has a rotary member with radial blades so arranged that the blades sweep close to the line at which the ginning roller and ginning knife engage. The speed at which cotton is fed to the ginning elements is determined by feed rollers 30 which may be driven by a hydraulic motor supplied with fluid through a valve that is adjustable to control the feed roller speed. The rollers 30 forward the cotton to a feed wheel 32 from which it passes down slides 34 and 50 to a rotary member 52 that transfers it to ginning roller 56 which is urged against the ginning knife 60. The ginning roller 56 has a leather or rubber-like surface which moves towards the knife 60 more rapidly than the tips of the blades of the rotary member 52. Because of this speed difference fibres tend to be drawn out ahead of seeds and some pre-ginning takes place before the fibres are pulled under the knife 60. Fine adjustment of the rotary member 52 is possible by screwmounted brackets which carry the bearings of this member. Several such rotary members may be employed to perform sucessive retarding actions on the seeds. Adjustment of the ginning roller 56 relative to the knife 60 is effected through a fluid pressure system which includes pistons on either side of the gin linked to sliding members that support the ginning roller bearings. The electrical control system for gin is so associated with the fluid pressure system that when the electric driving motor stops the roller 56 is moved away from the knife 60, thus avoiding damage to the roller cover from the hot knife. A form of ginning roller is described (Fig. 12, not shown) that is hollow and expansible with a support on one side which permits the exchange of sleevelike covers . Instead of tightly fitting roller covers hands may be employed that pass over an idler roller in addition to the ginning roller. Fibres separated from the seeds are removed by way of a duct 18. Unginned seeds are separated from ginned seeds and conveyed back to the feed hoppers.
