[Also in Division G6] A fuel element can is manufactured by internally coating a tube with stopweld material, flattening it by rolling, and expanding it by inflation with compressed air. The tube may be stainless steel or zirconium, and the stopweld material zirconium oxide or aluminium oxide. The fuel 1 is inserted after inflation and is basically uranium oxide. The rolling reduces the can wall thickness to 0À1 mm. The canning material may be stored or transported in its flat condition, or it may be rolled up into a coil.
