Abstract

1,028,516. Multi-stage evaporation; distillation of water. AITON & CO. Ltd. July 8, 1964 [July 8, 1963],No.26879/63. Heading B1B. Liquor is submitted to evaporation in a multiple-effect evaporatory, the heater of each effect 2 being of the vertical tube type, and the liquor withdrawn from the last effect is conducted to flash evaporation plant 1. The apparatus may be used for the distillation of water, or for the concentration of caustic soda solution, yeast extract, or glue. Water to be distilled enters the apparatus through line 5 and flows as cooling-medium through the condensers 3 of flash plant 1. The water then flows through the condenser 6 of a subsidiary flash plant 7 and through the condenser 8 of the ejector pumps 9, operated by steam, which extract non-condensable gases from plant 1. The water next flows through a series of preheaters 10, each of which is associated with an effect of the multiple-effect evaporator. The preheated water then enters the lower end of the tubes of the first effect A, which is heated by steam supplied through line 11. The vapour formed in A is withdrawn through line 12, and is conveyed in part to the associated preheater 10 and in part to the heating jacket of effect B. The condensate formed in preheater 10 also flows to the heating jacket of effect B. Water flows from the tubes of effect A to the tubes of effect B through line 14. The water leaving the last effect flows to flash plant 7, where some of it vaporizes; the vapour is condensed in condensers 6, and the condensate is added to the distillate withdrawn through line 16 from the heating jacket of the last effect. The water leaving plant 7 flows through line 17 to the main flash plant 1; and the vapours evolved therein are conducted to condensers 3 and 4, the condensate being added to the distillate. The residual water withdrawn from plant 1 through line 19 may be in part recirculated through condensers 4 a heater 20 to the input of plant 1. Heater 20 is heated by the vapours issuing from the last effect through line 21. The condensate from heater 20 is added, together with the distillate from the preheater 10 of the last effect, to the main distillate. Distilled water is withdrawn from the system through line 18.
