Abstract

Polymers of butadiene-1,3, are made by polymerizing butadiene, preferably in an inert solvent or diluent, in the presence of a catalyst comprising at least one aluminium dialkyl halide, at least one cobalt salt, at least one nickel salt and water wherein the aluminium/cobalt plus nickel ratio is greater than 1/1 , and the water/aluminium ratio is less than 0.9/1 but greater than 0.1/1 . In the polymer more than 85% of the units have a cis, 1,4-configuration. The polymerization may be effected with the catalyst "in situ," or "preformed." The cobalt and nickel salts may be salts of inorganic or organic acids. The exemplified catalyst is aluminium diethyl chloride, cobaltous chloride, nickelous chloride, and water.
