Abstract

1,028,085. Laminates &c. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Nov. 5, 1964 [Nov. 6, 1963; Aug. 18, 1964], No. 45164/64. Heading B5N. A method of laminating to at least one surface of a substrate having a volume resistivity not greater than 10<SP>-6</SP> ohm/cm. a web of thermoplastic material which when in the molten codition has a volume resistivity of at least 10<SP>-5</SP> ohm/cm., comprises imposing electrostatic charges on one surface of the web, bringing the other surface of the web into abutment with the substrate whereby said electrostatic charges cause the substrate and web to establish intimate contact over their abutment interface areas, said substrate and web being at a temperature of hot flow of the thermoplastic material at the moment of contact, and maintaining the substrate and web in contact and at said temperature until they have become bonded together at said interface area. Specified thermoplastics are polyethylene, polypropylene, olefin copolymers, vinyl chloride copolymers, polyvinylidene chloride, polystyrene, polyethylene glycol terephthalate and copolymers thereof, cellulose acetate, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyvinyl formal, polyacetals and polycarbonates. Specified substrates are tin plate, aluminium and alloys thereof. An apparatus in which banks of infra-red heaters provide the required temperature conditions is described.
