Abstract

A filled elastomer-forming composition comprises by weight (1) 100 pts. of an organopolysiloxane having 1.98 to 2.01 organic groups per Si atom, at least 2 of the groups, per molecule, being unsaturated groups, and an average molecular weight not less than 2 x 104, (2) 0.1 to 100 pts. of an organosilicon compound having at least 2 Si-bonded H atoms per molecule and an average molecular weight not greater than 20,000, (3) 0 to 150 pts. of a reinforcing filler, (4) 0 to 250 pts. of a semi- or non-reinforcing filler, the total amount of filler being not more than 260 pts., (5) 0 to 10 pts. of a structure control additive, and (6) as curing catalyst not more than 0.2 pt. of a Pt metal, viz. Ru, Rh, Pa, Os, Ir or Pt, in the form of a metal on a carrier, a salt or a complex. The unsaturated groups of siloxane (1) may be vinyl, allyl or cyclohexenyl, and the remaining groups may be alkyl, fluoroalkyl, aminoalkyl, cyanoalkyl, or phenyl or tolyl with or without amino or fluoro substituents. Ingredient (2) may be a silane, polysilane or polysiloxane. Other ingredients specified are fillers (3)-various C blacks and silicas; fillers (4)-diatomaceous earth, C blacks, clays, TiO2, CaCO3 and Zn silicate; and structure additives (5)-(tetra-alkylethylenedioxy) alkyl silanes, diaryldialkoxysilanes and bis-alkylsilyl ethers. In a typical Example (2) a siloxane gum composed of MeViSiO and Me2SiO units was milled with a liquid MeHSiO and C black, and the product was formed to shape and heated at 200 DEG C. to yield an elastomer. Uses.-For making electrical heating elements and panels.ALSO:Siloxane elastomer-forming compositions, particularly those containing C black fillers with or without other fillers (see Division C3), can be deposited from a solvent dispersion on a fabric of glass or polyethylene-terephthalate fibres and the resulting coated fabrics can be used as heating elements by attaching electrodes thereto. The conducting compositions can also be applied to rigid or semi-rigid substrates, e.g. hardboard, chipboard, plasterboard and sheet glass, as by spraying or knife coating, to form heating panels. In Examples, (1) a benzene dispersion of the elastomer-forming composition (containing C black) was coated on a fabric substrate and heat cured to give a silicone rubber coated tape; (4) a toluene dispersion of the composition (containing C black) was coated on glass cloth and heat cured and brass gauze electrodes were fixed thereto to form a heating element; and (8) a toluene dispersion of the composition (containing C black) was sprayed on a hardboard panel and heat cured and silver electrodes were then painted on opposite sides of the board to form a heating panel.
