Abstract

1,026,819. Strap fastenings; latches. N. E. GODFROY. Sept. 22, 1964 [Sept. 23, 1963], No. 38682/64. Heading E2A. A bracelet buckle comprises a housing 10 for attachment to one end of the bracelet, a latch 13 in the housing, a slide member 12 for attachment to the other end of the bracelet and adapted to be inserted into the housing for . engagement by the latch, a flexible strand 15 which is connected at one end to the slide member, and a strand retractor 14 in the housing and connected to the opposite end 15a of the strand for drawing the strand into the housing. The retractor 14 is mounted on a spindle 23 (Fig. 2, not shown), on the base 18 of the housing and comprises a drum 25 inside of which is a spiral spring 26 (not shown) which biases the drum into strand winding condition. The latch comprises a lug 33 mounted on a shaft 32 the ends of which are mounted in the side flanges 19 of the housing. The latch is biased to the latched position by a helical spring 35 extending between the lug 33 and one of the flanges 19, the movement of the latch being limited by a shoulder 32b on the shaft. The slide member comprises a blade 37 with a hooked locking finger 41 for engaging the lug 33. When the slide member is inserted into the housing, the hooked finger 41 engages the lug 33 and the strand is wound round the drum. When the buckle is released by axially moving the shaft 32 and the slide member is removed, the strand 15 is pulled out from the drum against the action of the spiral spring 26. The retractor may comprise two drums, one for holding the spring and one to receive the strand.
