Abstract

<PICT:1026675/C1/1> The low temperature form (form II) of sodium tripolyphosphate is produced in two treatment stages, viz.:-(i) solutions of mixed orthophosphate are dried to give an intermediate solid, and (ii) said solid is calcined with hot gases, said gases being furnace gases which are brought to a relative humidity of at least 16%, by being mixed with re-cycled process gases, before being utilized in the calcining stage. Exhaust gases are removed from the recycling circuit through the calcining stage and used along with other furnace gases for heating the first or drying stage. In the Figure, 1 represents the first treatment stage an atomizing drier fed by a solution of mixed orthophosphates which is evaporated with furnace gases from furnace 2 which gases are cooled to a desired temperature, e.g. 400 DEG C., in a chamber 3 by being mixed with air and some of the exhaust gases from the calcining stage from pipe 15. The solid product from 1 is lead by line 7 into the plate oven 8 where it is calcined by gases from furnace 9 which are brought to a desired temperature and humidity, e.g. 500 DEG C. and 20-25% relative humidity, in chamber 14 by being mixed, via line 13, with exhaust gases from oven 8 which have been cleaned in dust-separator 12. Since the gases from line 13 may still have a temperature of, for example 400 DEG C., only a small amount of furnace gas is required to produce the desired calcining temperature, but the quantity is also governed by the requirements of humidity, and mixtures containing at least three and preferably at least four to six times as much exhaust gas as furnace gas have been found suitable. To provide a suitable calcining atmosphere on starting up the process, steam is introduced into the furnace gases from line 16. The exhaust gases from the first stage (evaporator 1) are cleaned in dust separator 4 and pumped via pump 5 to concentrator 6 where their waste heat is utilized. One furnace may, if desired, replace the two furnaces 2 and 9, with appropriate division of the furnace gases to feed the two treatment stages.
