Abstract

1,026,535. Automatic speed control. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 24, 1963 [Jan. 26,1962], No. 3039/62. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H2] The speed, e.g. of a magnetic tape capstain 1, is controlled by the selective and progressive energisation of an electromagnetic clutch 5 or brake 6 according to whether a speed signal is above or below a reference level. The signal is generated by a strobe disc 13 and photo-cell 12 whose output pulses are "squared" at 14 and converted to a D.C'. voltage of a magnitude proportional to frequency at 15. Half wave rectifiers 18,19 detect the polarity of the difference signal which is applied through a D.C. amplifier 20 or 21 to the clutch or brake respectively. Speed adjustment may be by adjustment of the reference at 17 or by providing a number of tracks on the strobe wheel, each to produced the same frequency when the wheel rotates at different speeds, and selecting the appropriate track either by switching to its; own photocell or by radial movement of a single photocell. The clutch and brake may be of the eddy current type (see Division H2) or they may be of the powder type and combined in a single unit with the strobe wheel. A driving motor 3 may be A.C. shaded pole or squirrel cage, or D.C. shunt or compound wound.
