Abstract

Ethylene-a ,b -dicarboxylic acids, anhydrides or esters are reacted with bromine in a single stage at an elevated temperature to give a ,b -dibromoethylene-a ,b -dicarboxylic acids, anhydrides or esters. The reaction may be conducted in the presence of a Lewis acid as catalyst. The quantity of bromine used is preferably the stoichiometric amount but less than this amount may be used, particularly if the deficiency of bromine is made good by an equivalent amount of chlorine. Examples are given.
