Abstract

1,026,360. Washing machines. HOLZER PATENT A.G. Sept. 4, 1964 [Sept. 4, 1963; Sept. 11, 1963], No. 36468/64. Heading D1A. [Also in Division H2] In a washing machine, the programme is set by switching means mounted behind a moisture impervious panel 3 and operated from outside through the control panel. As shown, Fig. 1, in a cavity 2, sealed against moisture by a magnetically neutral panel 3, there are switches 5, 6, 7, 8 connected respectively to the contacts 9, 10, 11, 12 of programme switch 13, the other contacts being connected to feed wire 20. A switching arm 15 engages contacts 9, 10, 11, 12 and is connected through relay 16 to bus bar 19 and controls a bridging contact 17 of the control circuit of motor 18, which drives switch 13 through hunting and stepping gearing 21. Armatures 23 on switches 5, 6, 7, 8 are attracted by a permanent magnet 22 outside panel 3 to close the switch corresponding to the programme required. If switch 7 is closed and motor 18 is started manually, arm 15 moves rapidly across contacts 9 and 10 and on reaching contact 11 it breaks the motor control circuit at 17 so that the motor operates by slow step motion and the corresponding washing programme is carried out. In a modification, contact 17 is magnetically operated and arm 15 switches small control lamps. In a further modification, several magnets may be provided so that several switches may be closed to select a programme. Magnets may be mounted on a plate which is placed in different positions on the panel to select different programmes or the magnets may be mounted on a rotatable carrier. Armatures 23 may be magnetized and operated by pieces of metal. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), light sensitive switching cells 31, 32, 33, 34 are arranged in series, the control panel is partly transparent and a partly shadable light source is arranged outside it. Cell 31 is connected to supply line 35, cell 34 is connected through relay 36 to supply line 37 and the normally closed contacts 38, 39 control the current supply from line 37 to line 40 connected to the ends of switching relays 41, 42, 43 which are connected to the leads between cells 31, 32, 33, 34 and control programme selector contacts 44, 45, 46. In a modification, one light sensitive cell 53 is provided which, when shaded, starts motor 57 to cause the rotation of an arm 56 which engages successively the contacts of a switch 54 connected to programme selection relays 41, 42, 43, 51 each connected to a lamp 55. When the appropriate lamp lights up, the shading is removed from cell 53, motor 57 stops and the appropriate programme proceeds.
