Abstract

A stainless steel has the following percentage composition:- Ni 3-8 Cr 12-17 Co 7-13 Mn 0.01-1 C 0.01-0.15 N 0.005-0.1 Mo 0-5 Si not more than 0.15 Fe and incidental elements, the balance, the equivalent nickel index, viz Ni + 0.68 Cr + 0.55 Mn + 0.45 Si + 27 (C + N) + 0.2 Co + Mo being from 19.5 to 22. The incidental elements include A1 up to 0.2, Ca up to 0.1, Mg up to 0.1, Zr up to 0.1, B up to 0.01, Cu up to 2. The steel may be hot and/or cold worked in the austenitic state and then hardened by plastic deformation in the temperature range -15 to 38 DEG C to produce at least 20% reduction in cross-sectional area, and thereby convert 60-99% of the structure to martensite, followed by heating in the martensitic state to 400-455 DEG C for 1-48 hours. Following any working step and prior to plastic deformation, the steel is preferably annealed to 980-1150 DEG C.
