Abstract

An additive for improving the retention of filler and fibre fines and improving the drainage properties of paper pulp comprises a water-soluble terpolymer of 85-95 parts acrylamide, 0.3-2.0 parts maleic acid or anhydride or fumaric acid and 3-15 parts of an ethylenically unsaturated water soluble monomer, e.g. methacrylic acid. The terpolymer may be formed from a mixture of (1) an aqueous solution containing 30-80% of the monomers, (2) a water insoluble organic heat transfer medium, e.g. toluene, (3) 0.003-0.2% of a catalyst, e.g. a redox mixture of Na2S2O5 and K2S2O8 and (4) a surface active anti-sticking agent, e.g. ethylene oxide condensates of fatty acid amides or sorbitan mono-oleates, which is heated to a predetermined temperature and dissolved oxygen is removed from the mixture, e.g. by passage of an inert gas, whereby a distinct aqueous layer is formed within the reaction mixture and within which aqueous layer the monomers are polymerized. The pH of the reaction mixture may be adjusted to 9.0 using sodium hydroxide.ALSO:The retention of filler and fibre fines and the drainage properties of an aqueous paper pulp sheet are improved by adding to an aqueous paper pulp suspension, which may contain aluminium at least 0.01 lbs/ton of fibre of an organic water-soluble terpolymer, depositing such treated suspension upon a foraminous forming surface to form a continuous aqueous paper sheet comprising water and a paper fibre network and draining the water. The terpolymer comprises 85-95 parts acrylamide, 0.3-2.0 parts maleic or fumaric acid or maleic anhydride and 3-15 parts of an ethylenically unsaturated water-soluble monomer, e.g. methacrylic acid.
