Abstract

Dye liquors used for dyeing polyolefins are prepared by melting together (a) a water-insoluble dye having one or more alkyl groups of total carbon atom content at least 4 and (5) a polyoxyethylene compound which has a long chain alkyl group of at least 8 carbon atoms and which is, A a polyoxyethylene alkyl ether whose long chain alkyl group contains 11 or more carbon atoms and in which the polyoxyethylene groups account for 65-85% of tea weight; or, B a polyoxyethylene alkyl aryl ether in which the polyoxyethylene groups account for 65-85% of the weight; or, C a polyoxyethylene alkylamine whose long chain alkyl group contains 11 or more carbon atoms and in which the polyoxyethylene groups account for 60-80% of the weight; or, D a polyoxyethylene alkyl ester whose long chain alkyl group contains 11 or more carbon atoms and in which the polyoxyethylene groups account for 65-85% of the weight; or, E a polyoxyethylene alkylamide whose long chain alkyl group contains 11 or more carbon atoms and in which the polyoxyethylene groups account for 60-80% of the weight; or, F a polyoxyethylene sorbitan alkyl ester in which the polyoxyethylene groups and sorbitan groups account for 65-81% of the weight; at a temperature above the melting point of the water insoluble dye and then adding water to the product. The dyeing is effected at temperatures of at least 70 DEG C. or alternatively the polyolefin article is dipped into the dye liquor and subsequently subjected to a separate heating step preferably at 100-150 DEG C.
