Abstract

1,025,385. Cold separation of gas mixtures. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 15, 1963 [May 16, 1962], No. 18853/62. Heading F4P. In a process for freezing out readily condensible constituents from a gas mixture, e.g. helium containing water vapour and carbon dioxide comprising passing the mixture through a heat exchanger duct 9, Fig. 2 (not shown), cooled by cold helium traversing a duct 4 the so-cooled mixture leaving the cold end of duct 9 and containing traces of entrained ice is warmed to effect vaporization of said ice. Warming is effected in an inner duct 6 extending from the cold to the warm end of the exchanger and surrounded by a helical wire mesh 7 designed to conduct heat from the warm to the cold end thereof. A plurality of such exchangers 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), are arranged in series. In a modification, the cooling duct 11, Fig. 5 (not shown), of a plurality of exchangers in series extends axially of the duct 12 traversed by the gas mixture which in turn is surrounded by the warming duct 13 the outlet 15 of which may be connected to the inlet of trap 16, serving to vaporize any remaining entrained ice.
