Abstract

1,025,268. Bookbinding machines. L. J. B. R. FRENCH. July 23, 1964 [July 25, 1963], No. 29599/63. Addition to 947,417. Heading B6A. A bookbinding machine according to the parent Specification 947,417 is modified in that the book clamp is moved automatically between the input and output ends of the machine by an endless chain 2 which automatically disengages and re-engages the book clamp at a point in its travel from the input end to the output end to allow the book clamp to momentarily occupy a stationary position during the cover applying and nipping operation. The book clamp has upstanding members 7 with which a peg 5 on the endless chain 2 engages. The book clamp comes to rest above the coverapplying apparatus 16 when the movement of the peg is reversed to temporarily disengage the members 7. The peg actuates the arm 11 of a switch 12 to set the cover-applying apparatus in motion. On re-engaging the members 7, the peg 5 moves the book clamp to the output end of the machine and then returns it to the input end. To initiate a cycle of operations, a button 14 is depressed to close a switch 13. The button is held in this position by a latch 21 engaging a fixed bar 22. On returning to the input end, a pivoted lever 23 on the book clamp releases the latch 21 to open the switch 13 and stop the machine. Cam means at the input and output ends of the machine open and close the clamp jaws at the required moments.
