Abstract

1,024,974. Stamping; corrugating. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT Ltd. Feb. 15, 1963 [Feb. 15, 1962], No. 5902/62. Headings B3E and B3Q. Sheet material is shaped in a rubber diaphragm or rubber-bolster press comprises using a grooved die whereby a three-dimensional pattern is formed on the material, the form and depth of the pattern being determined by the shape of the grooves, the nature and thickness of the material and the pressure applied to the diaphragm or bolster. The die 11 comprises a base 12 having a plurality of V-shaped grooves 13 into which are placed form bars 14 shaped to fit the grooves and having sharp edges 15. Alternate bars 14 may be omitted or the bars may be grouped with spaces therebetween according to the pattern required. A metal sheet 16 is placed on the die and shaped beneath a rubber diaphragm or bolster to produce a wavy or other form thereon. During shaping the sheet material does not touch substantially the inclined surface of the bars or grooves adjacent the edges 15. In an embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) one of a plurality of identical segments 24 comprise cutaway portions 25 into which are fitted square sectioned grooved inserts 30, and upstanding grooved portions 26. The angle of the grooves may be varied and the inserts rotated according to the final pattern required on the sheet.
