Abstract
1,024,937. Selective embossing. KOHNER BROS. Inc. Jan. 22, 1964 [Sept. 26, 1963], No. 2814/64. Heading B6F. Type-wheel machines for embossing compound tapes.-A tool for embossing a length of flexible tape 124, Fig. 2, comprises a housing 12 having a funnel 144, Fig. 4, a carriage 122 mounting said tape and having a surface provided with a linear sequence of areas 139 for inscription thereon of alpha-numerical characters to be embossed, ratchet drive means 112, 214 for advancing the carriage through the tunnel, said housing having a viewing aperture 143 through which the successive areas 139 are exposed one after another to view, die assembly means including a character wheel 70 having registered sets of male and female characters 108, 110, respectively, and an actuating handle 178 for moving a selected male character towards the associated female character to emboss the tape. Index setting-arrangements.-The housing 16, Fig. 4, has mounted thereon a dial 34 which is integral with a pinion 54, those teeth 60 mesh with the teeth of a gear 68 integral with the character wheel 70 mounted rotatably on a pin 90. The character wheel 70 includes an anvil 72, which is formed with indents 111, Fig. 7, corresponding to each set of characters 108, 110 and which engage a nib 113 on the underside of a lip wall 18 of the housing 12. The selected set characters on the anvil 72 and an associated die 74 are aligned for impression by a wire 222, whose lip 228 enters one of the indents 220 on the underside of the dial 34 to lock the dial against rotation upon depression of the die actuating handle 178. The handle is provided with a presser foot, which on depression of the handle raises the die 74 towards the anvil 72 for embossing of the tape 124. The handle is restored by a spring 204 (Fig. 3, not shown). Letter-spacing arrangement.-The carriage 122, Fig. 4, is advanced in letter-spacing direction by a ratchet wheel 162, actuated by a pawl 214 attached to the handle 178. The ratchet wheel is integral with a gear 160 meshing with a rack 140 of the carriage 122. A space between the character may be effected by operation of a knob 156 connected to the gear 160. Line-spacing arrangements.-The carriage 122 is provided with two sets of grooves 130, 134 and 132, 136, Fig. 4, each set co-operating with a pair of vertically aligned top and bottom guide rails 150, 152, whereby a second line of characters may be obtained by insertion of the carriage so that the guide rails engage a different set of the grooves. Special holders.-The carriage 122 is provided at either end with pillers 126, 128, Fig. 2, between which the embossing tape 124 may be stretched by adhesion of a paper-backed pressure-sensitive adhesive layer to the pillars. For embossing, the tape which comprises a metal foil laminated to a vinyl backing, is placed with the metal foil facing upwards. Visual indication of type selected.-The selected embossing character 112 on the anvil 72, Fig. 7, may be seen in the centre of the dial 34 through aligned apertures 116, 120, Fig. 2, of the dial and pinion 54 and a magnifying lens 118, which is held between the dial and the pinion. The words to be embossed are removably inscribed in the areas 139 and the successive characters to be selected for embossing are visible through an aperture 143 of the housing 12. Types, dies and printing surfaces.-The die assembly 30, Fig. 7, comprises a die wheel 70 including an anvil 72, carrying female characters and a die 74 carrying male characters on radial arms 106, the anvil and die being aligned by the co-operation of key 82 and a keyway 84. A wear plate 76 is provided on the side remote from the male characters to prevent the presser foot 212, on the handle 178 to enter the radial slot between any of the characters and damage the die. The die and anvil are made of a tough, resilient plastics material such as nylon and the wear plate is formed from a thin acetate sheet.
