Abstract

1,024,895. Engine turning gear. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 5, 1965 [Feb. 13, 1964], No. 6087/64. Heading F1K. A rotor turning mechanism comprises a frictional band 39 capable of encircling a cylindrical part 37 of the rotor to be turned (e.g. the rotors of a turbine-generator set or large motor) lever means 45 to which the two ends of the band are attached at two spaced apart points respectively, operating means 53 arranged to apply thrust to the lever means at a suitable point so that the lever means are caused to move in such a direction as to draw the band tightly about the rotor and apply a frictional turning moment to the rotor sufficient to turn it about its axis and release means effective to remove the operating thrust from the lever means when the thrust means reach the end of a predetermined length of stroke and cause the operating means, the lever means and the band to be returned to their original positions after an operating stroke, the grip of the band on the rotor being loosened either at the end of the operating stroke if the rotor continues to turn or at the beginning of the return stroke of the mechanism. Whatever form of barring gear is provided for continuous rotation of a large rotor there are advantages in making it of sufficient size for the running condition only and providing a separate unit for the following functions :-(a) Starting from rest, (b) Inching, i.e. turning the rotor through a limited angle during inspection, maintenance or repair work, (c) Turning the rotor in an emergency when the power supply to the main barring gear has failed. The operating means may comprise an actuator, pneumatically and/or hydraulically operated.
