Abstract

1,023,894. Surgical lamps. PELTON & CRANE CO. May 19, 1964 [May 17, 1963], No. 20517/64. Heading F4R. A lighting device for surgical or dental use consists of a light source with a horizontallyextending filament and a reflector shaped as a portion of an elliptic paraboloid other than a paraboloid of revolution with its longer dimension vertical, a shield being arranged in front and to the sides of the light source. The light source may be a double-ended tubular electric lamp with a coiled-coil filament and a filling containing iodine. It is supported between socket members 37 carried in tubular jackets 48 supported on walls 40 forming part of a light shield 23 arranged in front of the lamp 35. The shield 23 is supported from the frame 24 of the reflector 25 by bolts 51 carried on side pieces 44 attached to the shield, springs 53 between the pieces 44 and frame 24 and nuts 52 enabling the position of the lamp 35 and shield 23 to be adjusted relative to the reflector 25. The frame 24 is carried by hollow bearings 17 extending inwards from a yoke 16 connected by a series of pivoted arms (not shown) to a transformer mounted on an upright, the yoke and arms being hollow to allow the passage of electric wires to the lamp. The reflector is symmetrically curved on both sides of the vertical and horizontal central planes in smooth curves equivalent to a series of curved segments of radius decreasing away from the central line and with centres offset from the central line.
