Abstract

1,023,677. Extruding; welding by fusion. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. Sept. 21, 1964 [Oct. 25, 19631, No. 38396/64. Headings B3P and B3R. A layer of aluminium 7 is provided on a tuba 1 of zirconium or its alloys, uranium or stainless steel by oxidizing the surface of the tube and extruding the aluminium layer on to the oxidized surface. The tube 1 is first cleaned and then preheated to 400-600‹ C. in air in an electric furnace to provide the oxidized surface; alternatively the oxide layer may be formed by anodizing in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. During extrusion the tube is mounted on a mandrel 2 which is rotated slowly whilst the aluminium layer is built up on the tube surface. An aluminium billet 4 is extruded by a ram 5 from a container 3 having a rectangular section die orifice 6. A pile of aluminium 9 is built up to form a stagnant pool and thus isolate the inner moving stream of aluminium from the atmosphere. A steel shim with a triangular notch is used to key the forward end of the extruded layer on the tube surface, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown). Welded joints.-When a tube 21, Fig. 5 (not shown), of the above metal is to be welded to an aluminium tube 24 the end of tube 21 is cut back from the aluminium layer 23 extruded thereon and a weld line is made at 26.
