Abstract

1,023,221. Screw conveyers. NOVOTECHNICS Ltd. Aug. 28, 1962 [May 30, 1961], No. 19571/61. Heading B8A. [Also in Division A4] Potatoes are moved, partially submerged, through a rotating drum 1, from an entry shoot 17 to an exit shoot 19, by a screw conveyer 6. While they are being conveyed, the potatoes are rubbed against rubber studded or ribbed liner 30 and sprayed by water jets from holes 18 in hollow conveyer shaft 7. The drum may be tilted so that the conveyer 6 lifts the potatoes clear of the water or, alternatively, they may be brought out on a slatted belt conveyer 24 having a separate water spray 26. The drum 1 is driven by motor M through belt 5 and the conveyer 6 by motor unit 14 through chain 12. The water is maintained at level W in tank 3 by overflow 31. The conveyer 6 may consist of a metal helix fixed directly to shaft 7 or to arms radiating from the shaft. Alternatively, a canvas reinforced rubber sheet may be attached to such arms.
