Abstract

1,021,256. Reactor shields. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 10, 1962 [Aug. 14, 1961], No. 29250/61. Heading G6C. [Also in Divisions E2 and F2] A closure for openings such as nuclear reactor standpipes comprises a body which forms a fluid-tight joint with a peripheral wall surrounding it, radially movable locking member disposed about the body and engageable with the standpipe, and a member axially disposed about the body and axially movable between a first position in which the locking members are held extended and a second position in which the locking members are allowed to retract. The upper end 11 of the standpipe includes an angular seating 36, a keyway 15, on annular sealing surface 13 and a locking groove 18. The plug comprises a body 10, on angular seating 35, sealing rings 12A, 12B, a cage 16 which is rigidly attached to the body 10 and supports the locking members in the form of balls 17, an axially slidable locking ring 19 for locking the balls 17 in position and having mounted in its top surface dowels 26 which, in the locked position shown, engage the under surface of a retaining ring 24 rotatably mounted on the body 10. To unlock the closure, grab arms 20 having fingers 21 on their lower ends are lowered past the retaining ring 24 by way of slots 30 therein and past similar slots 31 in the locking ring 19 to the position shown. Rotation of the grab causes the fingers 21 to move out of alignment with the slots 31 in the locking ring 19 to a position beneath a flange 23 in which the slots are situated. A key 34 on the grab arm 20 caused the retaining ring 24 to rotate against spring biasing to a position in which the dowels 26 are aligned with holes 26 in the retaining ring. Upward movement of the grab arms pulls the locking ring upwards to a position which allows the balls to be retracted and, when the top of the locking ring contacts the undersurface 27 of the retaining ring 24, withdraws the plug bodily from the standpipe. The plug may be used to entirely close an opening, or may itself have an opening therethrough.
