Abstract

1,020,973. Multi-wheel transporter suspension; railway vehicle undercarriages. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 26, 1964 [July 26, 1963], No. 29759/63. Headings B7D and B7L. Part of the weight of a transporter having steerable bogies 9 and a load 3 is supported by a multiplicity of wheels 33, 49 mounted on flexible membranes forming the lower boundaries of pressure vessels 21, 47 which are pressurized to support the weight or evacuated to lift the wheels from a road or rail surface. The wheels are mounted on brackets 29 rigidly or pivotally secured to a membrane 23 which may extend in one piece across the vehicle. Alternatively separate membranes are provided on the two sides of the vehicle to permit the use of different pressures on the two sides to maintain the load horizontal on a cambered surface. Air chambers 19 are provided in the longitudinal members 15 of the transporter connected by passages 25 to the adjacent bellows. In an alternative (Fig. 7, not shown) a bellows is mounted within the member 15 which has an open bottom to permit retraction of the wheels 33 from sight. The arms 39 connected to the air receivers 45 are pivotable through 90 degrees by jacks 43 to lift the wheels 49 from the ground. As in Fig. 8 (not shown) the wheels may be mounted on arms 91 pivoted to member 15 and bearing on pad 95 secured to the membrane 23.
