Abstract
In making leather which is resistant to boiling water, animal hides or pelts, e.g. calf pelts, are tanned with an aqueous liquor containing a tanning composition comprising one or more than one chromium salt and acid-binding dolomite, namely the double salt CaCO3, MgCO3 containing between 20% and 40%, by weight, of CaO and between 10% and 25% of MgO. Preferably, between 6 and 130 parts, by weight, of dolomite are used with each 100 parts of Cr2O3 present in the chromium salt or salts. The composition may also comprise one or more than one additional acid-binding substance, e.g. selected from sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate and sodium sulphite, the dolomite then constituting at least 10% of the total weight of acid-binding substance. Specific chromium salts exemplified include a chromium-aluminium-sodium sulphate complex salt and a chromium-sodium sulphate-acetic acid complex salt, prepared as described in Specification 969,865.
