Abstract

1,020,459. Fuel elements. LICENTIA PATENT VERWALTUNGS - G.m.b.H. Dec. 7, 1962 [Dec. 8, 1961], No. 46279/62. Heading G6C. In a nuclear fuel element comprising inner and outer concentric tubes 1, 2, the fuel 3 is present in granular form and one or other of the tubes is provided with transverse folds 8 which serve to compensate for differences in the thermal expansion of the tubes. At each end of the element is a closure member 4 which rigidly connects the tubes 1, 2 together while a ceramic ring 5 provides heat insulation between the fuel 3 and the lower closure member. A comparatively thick-walled tube 6 which serves for the internal support of the outer tube 1 under high external pressure is provided with apertures for the passage of fission gases into a free space 7 during operation. The fuel 3 packed into the interspace between the tubes 1, 2 is densified by shaking and/or stamping, or by hammering or pressing the tubes.
